Violent Deaths, 2004 - 2006

Counts of Death

This module provides data on violent deaths that occurred in Wisconsin, based on the Wisconsin Violent Death Reporting System (WVDRS). WVDRS collects data from 72 Wisconsin county medical examiner/coroner offices, many local police agencies, two crime laboratories, and vital records (death certificates). "Violent deaths" in this reporting system include all suicide deaths, all homicide deaths, deaths of undetermined intent, deaths resulting from legal intervention, and deaths related to unintentional firearm injuries. The module provides three separate query pages. This query page determines counts of violent deaths by type of death, allowing you to select a subpopulation or circumstance of death. Another page provides rates of violent deaths. A third page, Violent Death Weapons, provides data on the weapons or mechanisms involved in violent deaths in Wisconsin.

To shape your query, first decide the measure you want, either number of violent deaths or ranked types of violent death. You can narrow your focus to a particular type of violent death.

Next, select the geographic area. You can also choose to focus on selected age, sex, race, or ethnicity groups, or violent death circumstances. Finally, choose row and column variables for your table.

Note: To use the Ranked Types of Violent Death measure, you need to select it here AND choose Type of Violent Death as a ROW variable in Step 6 below. Deaths are sorted (ranked) in order of frequency.

Note: The "type of violent death" codes used in the Violent Deaths module differ from the "manner of death" codes used in the Mortality and Injury Mortality modules in WISH. As a result, counts and rates from the Violent Death module may differ from those obtained from the Mortality and Injury Mortality modules.

Note: To see statistics for a specific type of violent death, you must specify one or more in the drop-down list above AND choose Type of Violent Death as a ROW or COLUMN variable in step 6 or 7 below.


 
Step 3. Choose One or More Geographic Areas
All locations refer to place of injury.

State: Click on the "Wisconsin statewide" button. (This is the default option.)
Region: Click on the "Region" button. Then select the region name, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple regions.
County: Click on the "County" button. Then select the county name, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple counties.
Regional Trauma Advisory Council: Click on the "Regional Trauma Advisory Councils" button. Then select the name, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple names.

Note: To see results for individual areas, first select the areas of interest here, then choose "Geographic Area" as a ROW variable or COLUMN variable (Step 6 or 7).
