Teen Births Module (Teen Birth Rates)
(Revised October 2007)

This module creates statistics on the rate of births to Wisconsin teens since 1989. Another module shows Percent of Births to Teens

This revision adds 2006 birth and population data.

To define your query, first choose a measure, such as the overall teen birth rate. You may focus on certain counties or regions for the current year or a range of years since 1989. Finally, choose row and column variables.

Note: Rates can only be calculated for geographical areas and subpopulations for which annual population estimates are available.

Prepared tables showing county trend information can be found in the Infants and Pregnant Women Community Health Profiles.

See Measures Used In Birth Modules for definitions and notes on measurement.

Step 1. Which measure do you wish to focus on?

If you submit your request at this point, you will see results for Wisconsin statewide and for the five Department of Health Services regions, for the latest available year of data (2006).

Step 2. Choose One or More Geographic Areas
You can ask for data for the entire state of Wisconsin or for smaller geographic areas. All locations refer to residence of mother.

State: Click on the "Wisconsin statewide" button. (This is the default option.)
Region: Click on the "Region" button. Then select on the region name, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple regions.
County: Click on the "County" button. Then select the county name, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple counties.

Note: To see results for individual areas, first select the areas of interest here, then choose "Geographic Area" as a ROW or COLUMN variable (Steps 4 and 5 below).

:

Prior to June 28, 2007, regional rates were based on incorrect population estimates (except for the Southeastern region). WISH users who generated regional rates  before June 28, 2007 should investigate whether conclusions based on these results have changed due to the corrected rates.

Step 3. Choose One or More Years
You can see data for the latest available year (2006). Or you can choose to see one or more single years, or one or more groups of years. If you are requesting data for an area or group with few annual births, it may be useful to combine years of data. WISH suppresses small numbers (cell size less than 5) to comply with Wisconsin vital records data privacy guidelines.

One or more years: Click on the "One or more years" button. Then select a year, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select more than one year.

Specify your own years: Click on this button, then enter the years of interest, one per box or as a range.

Note: To see results for a series of years (or a series of year groups), first select the years of interest here, then choose "Year(s)" as a ROW or COLUMN variable in Step 5 or 6 below.

Step 4. CHOOSE A ROW VARIABLE:

Step 5. CHOOSE A COLUMN VARIABLE (optional):
