WISH Query
Prenatal Care Module
(Revised October 2007)

This module creates statistics on prenatal care to Wisconsin residents since 1989. It provides data on the number and geographic location of births and selected characteristics of the mother, the infant, and their health care.

This revision adds 2006 birth data and refines the measure of mother's education.

To define your query, you may focus on certain counties, regions or local health departments for the most recent year or a range of years. You may also select specific maternal characteristics, such as mother's age, education, marital status, or race/ethnicity. Or you may select characteristics of the infant, such as gestational age, birthweight, or sex. You may also request data about the health care received, such as the trimester that prenatal care began, the adequacy of prenatal care, or the delivery method.

Finally, choose row and column variables for your table from a list that includes geographic areas, years, maternal or infant characteristics, or health care.

Prepared tables showing county trend information can be found in the Infants and Pregnant Women Community Health Profiles.

Step 1. Which measure do you wish to focus on?

If you submit your request at this point, you will see results for Wisconsin statewide and for the five Department of Health Services regions for the latest available year of data (2006).

Step 2. Choose One or More Geographic Areas
You can ask for data for the entire state of Wisconsin or for smaller geographic areas. All locations refer to residence of

State: Click on the "Wisconsin statewide" button (the default option).
Region: Click on the "Region" button. Then select one region, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple regions.
County: Click on the "County" button. Then select one county, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple counties.
City:Click on the "City" button. Then select one city name, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select multiple cities.

Step 3. Choose One or More Years
You can see data for the latest available year (2006). Or you can choose to see one or more single years, or one or more groups of years. If you are requesting data for an area or group with few annual births, it may be useful to combine years of data. WISH suppresses small numbers (cell size less than 5) to comply with Wisconsin vital records data privacy guidelines.

One or more years: Click on the "One or more years" button. Then select a year, or hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and select more than one year.

Specify your own years: Click on this button, then enter the years of interest, one per box or as a range.

Note: To see results for a series of years (or a series of year groups), first select the years of interest here, then choose "Year(s)" as a ROW or COLUMN variable in Step 5 or 6 below.

Choose Specific Characteristics (Optional)
This limits your analysis to a specific subpopulation. (Example: Births to mothers 18-19 years of age, non-Hispanic white, who used tobacco during pregnancy.) Choose one or more characteristics to focus your analysis.
