Alcohol use during pregnancy is a leading preventable cause of physical, cognitive, and behavioral problems. According to the National FASD Center for Excellence, one in 10 U.S. women drink alcohol while pregnant and at least 40,000 babies are born each year affected by maternal drinking. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is the umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur due to maternal alcohol consumption, and includes the diagnoses of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND), and alcohol-related birth defects (ARBD).

Prairielands ATTC is offering a unique leadership preparation program that provides balance of traditional training seminars, distance education, and field experiences. This six-month long experience requires commitment on the part of the institute protégé and the agency in which the protégé is employed. The primary goal of the PATTC Leadership Institute is to cultivate new leaders within the addiction field through the enhancement of knowledge and development of competences among new and emerging leaders.

The Substance Abuse Certificate Program 
The Substance Abuse Certificate Program provides information and skills to help social workers, mental health providers, clergy, and other human service professionals make real differences in the lives of the substance abusers they may encounter in their day-to-day work. It is a comprehensive series of five courses; Courses 1-4 last one day each, Course 5 runs for two days. You must have completed Courses 1-4 before you enroll in Course 5. Except for Course 5 (Skills for working with substance abusers), you may enroll in each course separately but must complete all five to receive the certificate.

Prairielands ATTC,  The Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Prairielands) provides educational opportunities for persons interested in substance abuse treatment and counseling, including health professionals in primary prevention and treatment of substance abuse. Prairielands is housed at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Services are offered on and off-campus, sometimes via the Iowa Communication Network and similar systems in each of the five states in its region. Prairielands also provides consultation, technical assistance, and continuing education seminars.
