Classification of Nursing Services
Nurses in independent practice should use the following criteria to determine whether a service is skilled (i.e., requires the skills of an RN or LPN):
- The inherent complexity of the service. For example, some services (such as intravenous or intramuscular injections or insertion of catheters) are classified as skilled nursing services on the basis of their complexity alone.
- The medical condition of the recipient. The recipient’s medical condition may be such that a medically oriented task that would ordinarily be considered unskilled may be considered a skilled service because it only can be safely and effectively provided by an RN or LPN.
- The accepted professional standards of medical and nursing practice.
