Recipient Eligibility for Private Duty Nursing Services
Ventilator-Dependent Recipients
In accordance with HFS 107.113(1), Wis. Admin. Code, a ventilator-dependent recipient is eligible for respiratory care when he or she meets all of the eligibility criteria for PDN and:
- Is medically dependent on a ventilator for at least six hours per day. In
addition, the recipient is required to meet one of the following two
conditions:
- Has been hospitalized for at least 30 consecutive days for his or her respiratory condition. The 30 consecutive days may occur in more than one hospital or nursing facility.
- If the recipient has been hospitalized for less than 30 days, the recipient’s eligibility for services will be determined by Wisconsin Medicaid’s Chief Medical Officer on a case-by-case basis, and may include discussions with the recipient’s pulmonologist and/or primary care physician to evaluate the recipient’s diagnosis, prognosis, history of hospitalizations for the respiratory condition, and weaning attempts, when appropriate.
- Has adequate social support to be treated at home.
- May have ventilator care safely provided at home.
