Refugee
Health Screening Resources for Medical Providers in Wisconsin
The Federal Refugee Act of 1980 created a uniform system
of services for refugees resettled in the United States. The Act
entitled all refugees to a comprehensive health assessment, to be
initiated as soon as possible following arrival. Resources on this
page are general resources to be used for all refugee health assessments.
Refugee health screening is paid for through either Refugee Medical
Assistance or Medical Assistance. In Wisconsin refugee
screening is often a partnership between local health departments and
private providers. Local health departments have contracts with the
Department of Workforce Development, Immigration Integration
Section. The Immigration Integration section reimburses health
departments for the services they provide through Federal Refugee Medical
Assistance funds. Private providers bill Medicaid directly for the
services they provide. For more information on funded refugee service
providers go to the Department
of Workforce Development web site.
