Healthy Birth Outcomes:
Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities
Supporting Data
Infant mortality rates (the number of deaths during the first year of
life per 1,000 live births in a population group) reflect a tragic loss of
life to individuals, families, and the community. The magnitude of
infant mortality also reflects broader social and economic conditions that
affect maternal and infant health, including factors such as access to
high-quality health care, education, poverty, and racism.
