Nutrition and Physical Activity Program

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program provides statewide leadership to decrease overweight and obesity, increase physical activity and improve nutrition. Located in the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Program and its partners have developed and are implementing the Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan to accomplish the overall goal of preventing obesity and chronic disease.

New Content The Worksite Wellness Regional Workshops are being held in regional locations from April to July 2008.  Learn more about these workshops and how to register at the above link.

New Content Weighing and Measuring in Schools (PDF, 1.69 MB) - This document has been developed with the following objectives: 1) to help schools to be better informed when making the decision of whether or not to weigh and measure students; 2) to provide guidance and policy recommendations to schools that choose to weigh and measure students: and 3) to provide resources for schools to create environments supportive of healthy lifestyles.  To order a hard copy, contact Mary Pesik.

Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan

The Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan is a long range planning document focusing on the best ways to be active, eat well and prevent obesity.  A complete copy of the plan and an executive summary are available.

New Content The Worksite Wellness Resource Kit  

The second edition of the resource kit was released in September 2007, with additional information added based on input from worksites.  The kit is a tool to assist worksites with implementing strategies that have been proven to be effective.  The kit walks you through the process of developing a worksite wellness program.

Be Active

  • Choose fruits & vegetables

  • Choose whole grains

  • Eat breakfast

  • Watch your portion sizes

  • Limit sugar sweetened beverages, drink water

  • Choose to breastfeed 

  • At least 30 minutes per day for adults

  • At least 60 minutes per day for children

  • At least 5 days a week

  • Everyday activities count (ex. yard work)

  • Incorporate activity into your day (take a walk at lunch)

  • Decrease TV viewing
