Facts and
Figures: Diabetes in Wisconsin
Diabetes is a serious, common, costly, yet controllable
disease affecting over 329,000 adults and 4,000 children and adolescents
in Wisconsin.
People with diabetes are at increased risk of
diabetes-related complications, including blindness, kidney disease, foot
and leg amputations, cardiovascular disease, stroke, depression, poor oral
health, and death from influenza and pneumonia.
Besides serious health-related complications, diabetes is
also economically costly in Wisconsin. The direct (medical care) and
indirect (lost productivity) costs of diabetes in Wisconsin total an
estimated $4.52 billion.
