Spit Tobacco Prevention Program

The Wisconsin Dental Association, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Wisconsin Tobacco Control Board, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Department of Health and Family Services have teamed up to fight spit tobacco use.

The anti-spit tobacco educational program is targeted to children, introducing the dangers of using spit tobacco through a comic book featuring Milwaukee Brewers players. The comic book provides oral health messages, encourages children to read, and incorporates other educational skills. Some of the items children will learn from the comic book include health terms and language, mathematics, and Wisconsin facts and history.

From 2000 through 2003, each fifth grade classroom in Wisconsin (public and private schools)  received comic books and lesson plans as a comprehensive anti-spit tobacco educational program.  Fifth grade teachers were also encouraged to invite dental professionals to their classrooms during the use of the lessons.  Efforts to continue the program in 2004 are ongoing.

In addition, 10,000 children received a comic book on Saturday, May 12, 2001 during a Milwaukee Brewer Baseball game at Miller Park for "Stamp Out Spit Tobacco" Comic Book Night.
