Breastfeeding
Promotion and Support

Governor Doyle has proclaimed August
Breastfeeding Promotion Month in Wisconsin

The theme for 2008 is "Mother Support: Going for the Gold"

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is August 1-7, 2008. This year’s theme is “Mother Support: Going for the Gold.”

In conjunction with the Olympics in August, WBW 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding:

  • breastfeeding exclusively for six months; and

  • providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond.

“Breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby," Governor Doyle's proclamation declares, "with significant benefits for infants, mothers, families and communities.”

Encouraging mothers to breastfeed their babies and encouraging the community to support breastfeeding are important steps to have healthier Wisconsin residents, and also reduce health care costs now and in the future.
