State agencies and health care

Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services is responsible for programs related to child welfare, long-term care, physical and developmental disability, sensory disability, mental health, public health, Medicaid, regulation and licensing of a variety of programs and facilities, and operation of care and treatment facilities.

Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance regulates and monitors health insurance plans and health maintenance organizations.

Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing is responsible for licensing most health care professionals including doctors, nurses, dentists, podiatrists, and chiropractors.

Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) offers laboratory services in clinical (human), environmental, and occupational health, as well as testing programs for public and private laboratories.

The Bureau of Consumer Protection in the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is a place to turn if you have a complaint about unfair or deceptive business practices. These may include medical billing problems as well as problems with medical quackery.

Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds operates the health benefit program for Wisconsin state employees and retirees.

The American Red Cross provides information and support to help you prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

National Farm Medicine Center (NFMC): This is a not-for-profit program of the Marshfield Medical Research Foundation, a division of Marshfield Clinic.  It addresses disease and injury problems of farmers, ranchers, and others in industries related to agriculture. Its Web site includes information on agricultural injuries, back pain, respiratory health, and skin cancer.
