Nutrition Education Program (FSNEP)

The Nutrition Education Program is a program funded by USDA, FNS to improve the nutrition of FoodShare applicants and recipients and other low-income people. Educational activities are provided through the FS NEP that address nutrition-related topics such as:

  • Food-related resources and programs available;
  • Physical activity;
  • Guidelines for healthy eating;
  • Basic food skills including meal planning;
  • Food safety education; and
  • Food resource management, including concepts and skills to make food dollars last, including FoodShare benefits.

These topics are addressed in a number of ways, including one-on-one sessions, class activities, demonstrations, and the use of standard curricula such as the Five-A-Day Program and Eat Smart. Play Hard. Collection. The main goal of the program is to educate individuals about diet and activity lifestyle changes that can be made to improve health. Nutrition education occurs primarily in collaboration with other local organizations that are in contact with low-income individuals (e.g. WIC, TEFAP, schools, economic support agencies, etc.).

Currently, Wisconsin’s Nutrition Education Program extends to 59 counties and two tribes through the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, and the Ho-Chunk Nation.

If you are interested in making this resource available to FoodShare applicants and recipients, please contact the nutrition educator in your area. They will be able to provide you with additional information about the types of activities they are offering in your area.
