Wisconsin Hepatitis C Program
The Wisconsin Hepatitis C Program is the lead
agency in Wisconsin responsible for coordinating the state's public health
activities related to the prevention, detection and treatment of hepatitis C.
May 19 is World Hepatitis Day -- Are You Number 12? As
part of World Hepatitis Day, the World Hepatitis
Alliance
and over 200 patient groups around the world are asking ‘Am I Number
12?’ to increase awareness of the shocking statistic that one in
12 people on the planet are living with hepatitis B or hepatitis C and
yet the majority of those infected are unaware. Consider
these vital facts:
- 500 million people worldwide are currently infected with hepatitis B
or C
- This is over 10 times the number infected with HIV/AIDS
- Between them, hepatitis B and C kill 1.5 million people a year
- One in every three people has been exposed to either or both viruses
- Most of the 500 million infected do not know
World Hepatitis Day
occurs in May which is Hepatitis Awareness Month and a time when health
officials encourage everyone to lean more about viral hepatitis
prevention and liver health. For
