Synopsis of Training Northwest Region

All of the following training opportunities are designed to be meaningful to persons working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities in the community. 

Abuse and NeglectAbuse and neglect are defined in detail as well as legal implications.  A video is shown followed by discussion. 

Aging and Disabilities:  Covers the physical aging process and special problems related to people with developmental disabilities.  Also looks at the mental aspects of aging and Alzheimer's disease.  The segment ends with suggestions for successful aging.

Alzheimer's and Dementia in People with Disabilities:  The focus of this session is primarily on mental aspects of aging, defining  dementia/Alzheimer's, and looking at specific elements and methods to help people cope with the disease.  

Basic First Aid:  How to assess an injury and what to do.  Different situations are discussed with appropriate interventions (wound care, choking, poisoning, burns).

Basic Nutrition:  A review of the components of a balanced diet and how to make healthy choices.  Addresses how to promote healthy food choices for consumers.

Resident Rights:  This is a basic resident rights review done through an interactive game in which situations are presented to the audience. Members have to respond with the appropriate "right" for the example.  Choice and risk are discussed.  Also, specific discussion regarding rights' issues.

Crisis Response:  Discusses health factors in crisis intervention as well as behavior issues, strategies, and existing community models for managing crisis in the community.

Dignity and Human Worth:  The importance of caregiver attitudes and behavior is addressed. Interactive activities and a short video are used.

Down Syndrome:  Health issues commonly seen in persons with Down Syndrome.  Review of the aging process and Alzheimer's Disease in persons with Down Syndrome.

Epilepsy:  Epilepsy is defined; current medications are discussed and safety factors.

Goals and Objectives:  How to identify meaningful goals and objectives for a consumer and assess and evaluate progress.

Health Concerns Related to Behavior:  A brief review of body systems and how the effects of certain disease processes may cause pain or discomfort which could be demonstrated in the form of certain behaviors in those with developmental disabilities or dementia.  

Health Factors in Crisis Intervention:  Discusses health factors in crisis intervention as well as behavior issues, strategies, and existing community models for managing crisis in the community.  

Infection Control:  A review of most common infectious diseases and how they are transmitted. Standard precautions for the home are discussed.  This includes use of protective equipment, handling of laundry, cleaning, hand washing, etc.

Introduction to Autism:  Definition of autism including the wide spectrum of autism disorders.  Common characteristics and treatment approaches.

Introduction to Essential Lifestyle Planning:  This type of future’s plan is described through a case presentation that demonstrates that everyone has definite preferences, regardless of the severity of disability.  It shows that the preferences can be a source of valuable information that can be used to develop an appropriate living arrangement or to improve on the person’s current residential service.

Medication Basics I and II:  The first hour focuses on a review of factors affecting the success of any medication treatment, forms of drugs, routes of medications, drug related problems, medication errors, side effects, and documentation.  The second hour focuses on psychopharmacology: why medications are used for certain psychiatric conditions, importance of documentation to help determine effectiveness of these medications, and what information is most helpful to share with the physician.

Meeting the Challenge of Difficult Behaviors:

  • Emotional effects of health problems:  A brief review of body systems and how the effects of certain disease processes may cause pain or discomfort which could be demonstrated in the form of certain behaviors in those with developmental disabilities or dementia.   How to look for clues and provide useful information to the doctor.

  • Caregiver values and attitudes:  A look at the values caregivers frequently bring to their job and the attitudes they hold with regard to their work.  Also examined is the effects these values and attitudes have on caring for and supporting the individuals the caregiver serves.

  • Proactive approaches:  A discussion of what proactive behavioral approaches are, how they can be developed at home and in work and other programs, and why they can help to reduce or prevent problem behaviors.  

  • Function of behaviors:  To better understand why behavior occurs, we look at the factors that influence it. Factors are identified as internal or external. The differences and impact they have on designing solutions is discussed.

  • Safe responding in difficult situations:  Strategies for intervention to insure the safety of staff and clients when a consumer’s behavior becomes dangerous.

  • Recognizing and responding to escalating behavior:  Reactive strategies are intended to safely bridge the gap between the onset of challenging behaviors and the point at which long-term approaches take effect.  This presentation looks at several specific strategies and describes how they might best be integrated into an overall intervention plan.

  • Developing a Supportive Environment:

Mental Illness and Developmental Disabilities (Anxiety, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder):  Looks at obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, and clinical depression and the special problems encountered by people with developmental disabilities who suffer from these disorders.  Also, covers treatment and services available.

Oral Health and Nutrition:  Discusses the relationship of oral health to general health, the process of oral disease, and the role of nutrition.  A film is used to demonstrate oral care techniques.  

Relationships and Sexuality:  Addresses the importance of relationships and how to assist individuals with developmental disabilities  build relationships in the home and community. Also addresses issues concerning sexuality.

Supporting Individuals with Challenging Behavior:  A three hour training on supporting individuals with complex behavior challenges.  Topics covered include intervention styles for specific diagnosis, and how to develop behavior support plans in compliance with the state OQA/BLTS Restrictive Measures Approval Process.  

Taking Care of the Caregiver: A stressed out, unhappy caregiver cannot give the best care. Included are basic techniques for managing and dealing with stress, and maintaining a balanced outlook under stressful conditions.
