Caregiver Training

Every entity must ensure that its employees, contractors, volunteers, clients and nonclient residents are knowledgeable about the entity's  misconduct reporting procedures and requirements.  Staff must be trained to immediately report to the appropriate person all allegations of misconduct, including abuse or neglect of a client or misappropriation of a client's property.

Caregiver Program Training

Abuse and Neglect Prevention Training

Wisconsin is one of three states to receive federal pilot funding to create and deliver abuse and neglect prevention training for caregivers in long term care settings.  The primary goal of the training is to reduce the incidence of abuse, neglect and misappropriation.  Wisconsin's innovative training approach utilizes multiple modes of delivery, including an experiential component and a series of topical workshops and a DVD-based training.

The training is designed for direct caregivers and managers in nursing homes, long-term care hospitals, facilities serving people with developmental disabilities, hospices, home health agencies, community based residential facilities and personal care worker agencies.

The pilot runs until October 2007 but DHFS plans to continue funding the training through June 2008.  During this time, the project will focus on train-the trainers to teach long-term care providers to train the materials themselves.

  • Experiential Training Materials (PDF, 14 KB): During this training, participants interact with each other by participating in reality-based scenarios.  Each participant takes on the life of one of the scenario characters, such as a caregiver, manager, resident/client, or family member.  Scenarios address the following topics:  emotional abuse, mental abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, neglect and misappropriation.
