Nurse Aide Training, Testing and Registry Survey Results

The Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS) is improving Nurse Aide Training, Testing and Directory (referred to as "registry" in many states) processes by:

  • standardizing training and testing
  • providing notice of employment eligibility expiration to nurse aides
  • increasing the accuracy of Directory data
  • streamlining the processing of Directory paperwork.

To assist in designing the changes, a survey was mailed to all other state registries, asking them to complete and return the survey by November 1, 2000. 32 states responded to the request, resulting in the following information:

Number of nurse aides currently on registry:

  • Range from 5,612 (Nevada) to 268,307 (Illinois)

  • Average 25,000 – 45,000

Paper based record retention system for nurse aides on registry:

  • Records destroyed after 2 to 10 years - Yes 19

Computer based record retention system for nurse aides on registry:  Yes 26

Automated interactive voice response system:  Yes 18

Internet for any part of registry:  Yes 13

Any part of registry system (application, renewal, verification of eligibility to work, etc.) automated:  Yes 13

Number of staff who operate registry:

  • 1 staff = 5 states

  • 2 staff = 5 states

  • 3 staff = 9 states

  • 4 staff = 5 states

  • 5 staff = 4 states

  • 6 staff = 1 state

  • Greater than 6 staff = 3 states

Days and hours of operation:

  • Monday – Friday = 29 states (3 did not respond)

  • 8:00 – 4:30 or 5:00

  • Arizona= 120 hours

  • California= 90 hours

  • Colorado= 80 hours

  • Connecticut= 100 hours

  • Florida= 120 hours

  • Georgia= 85 hours

  • Hawaii = 80 hours

  • Idaho = 120 hours

  • Illinois= 120 hours

  • Kansas= 90 hours

  • Maine= 150 hours

  • Missouri= 175 hours

  • New Hampshire= 100 hours

  • North Carolina= 120 hours

  • Rhode Island= 120 hours

  • Washington= 120 hours

  • West Virginia= 120 hours

  • Wyoming= 90 hours
