Demographics of Aging in Wisconsin

This page provides links to information about population aging in Wisconsin counties. The PowerPoint slideshow titled "Wisconsin's Elder Boom: Projections for the Growing 65+ Population" provides a series of colored maps showing how population aging is expected to affect Wisconsin counties over the next 25 years. The numbers behind the maps are available in the downloadable Excel file called "Population Projection Tables."  All population projections data come from the Wisconsin Department of Administration's Population Projections program.

In addition, three documents are available for each county and for the state as a whole.  Each contains information from U.S. Census 2000, stored in PDF format for you to download or print.

  • The Population Tables present official population counts and basic information about age, race and living arrangements in table format.  All of this basic information comes from the Census "short form," also known as Summary File 1. These files take 11 KB.

  • The Population Overviews include the same basic population information in an easy to read summary. The file size of these overviews is 13 KB.

  • The third document contains a summary of the older population's Social and Economic Characteristics, including income, poverty, education, marital status and disability status from the Census "long form" (Summary File 3).  These files take 14 KB.

For more details about your county's population, or for other Census information, please contact Cindy Ofstead, Department of Health and Family Services, Bureau of Aging and Disability Resources at (608) 267-3202 or email ofstecm@dhfs.state.wi.us

To find a specific county, click below on the first letter of its name. Each of the three files is also available for the whole state under Wisconsin at the end.
