Depression
One in four women is likely to experience severe (clinical)
depression. All women are vulnerable to depression, regardless of race,
age, or income. Depression affects the body, mood, thoughts, eating
habits, sleep patterns, and how you feel about yourself. Depression is treatable. But
only 20% of women get the therapy or medicine they need. Untreated
depression is the number-one cause of suicide.
What you can do about depression:
- Talk to your health care provider about professional help. But
remember, even with this help you still need support from family and
friends.
- Set realistic goals to take care of yourself and start taking steps
to meet those goals.
- Share your feelings with others.
- Do things that make you feel better such as: exercise, going to a
movie, a ball-game, or religious or social activities.
- Give yourself time to recover. Don’t blame yourself or accept
negative thinking about yourself.
