The 14 Carrot Gold Award recognizes excellence in the
promotion of increased fruit and vegetable consumption in Wisconsin.
The award is a joint effort of the Wisconsin WIC Program, the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program
and
the Wisconsin
Nutrition and Physical Activity Program.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified increased fruit
and vegetable consumption as a strategy to prevent and reduce the overweight and
obesity problem in the nation.
The Winners for 2007
- Becky Gutzman of the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program is
recognized for her leadership in conducting "Got Dirt?" workshops
for child care providers in Columbia and Dodge counties. Partnering with the
UW-Extension Master Gardeners program, the workshops included hands-on
instruction and nutrition education tips designed especially for child care
providers. Ms. Gutzman estimates that about 25 new gardens were started due
to the workshops.
- The South Side Parents Against Lead in Milwaukee is honored for
their efforts in establishing a lead-free environment to grow fresh
vegetables. Recognizing that the homes in their neighborhood were painted
with lead paint, and that paint chips could contaminate the soil in their
yards, the community came together to find land for a safe community garden
to grow healthy foods that they hope will lower lead levels among their
community.
- FEAST (Food security, Education, Access, Sustainable agriculture
and Traditions) was chosen for increasing awareness of and accessibility to
fruits and vegetables by establishing a mobile market for Ashland and
Bayfield counties.
- Melinda Stuart of the Waukesha County Nutrition Coalition and
UW-Extension is honored for the "Garden Gleaning Program" which
collects fresh fruits and vegetables from community gardens, individual
gardeners, farmers' market vendors and customers and donates the produce to
food pantries and meal sites. Nutrition education and information about
gardening is also offered to recipients of the produce.
Honorable mention was given to:
- Emily Moore of Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire for
distributing fresh fruits and vegetables to low-income families through a
mobile cooler and a weekend "Kids' Meals" program.
- Erica Sherman of the Wood County Health Department for establishing
and expanding a Wood County pilot program bringing nutrition and physical
activity promotion into child care settings.
- Sherrie Tussler of the Hunger Task Force in Milwaukee for
maintaining a farm at the Milwaukee County House of Correction that
donates produce to emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and
low-income elderly housing sites.
