Arthritis in Wisconsin

This document, released in January 2003, was the first report to provide current information on the prevalence of arthritis and its impact on Wisconsin adults. The report used data from the 2000 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and Wisconsin Inpatient Hospital Discharge Database. At that time, almost 1.5 million adults in Wisconsin had physician-diagnosed arthritis or chronic joint symptoms. The report does not provide information about children with arthritis.

Data on physician-diagnosed arthritis, chronic joint symptoms and the impact of arthritis on health-related quality of life is collected on an ongoing basis. This surveillance system provides information needed to develop programs and policies for early diagnosis and increased access to self-management courses. (Request copy).

Wisconsin Arthritis Action Plan 2003-2008

The statewide Arthritis Advisory Council developed the Wisconsin Arthritis Action Plan 2003-2008 in response to the data reported in Arthritis in Wisconsin. (Request copy). The Plan was released in January 2004. Its objectives are to communicate the burden of the condition, increase awareness of arthritis as a public health issue, and implement programs, policies, and systems that will effect change. The Council, a coalition of over forty member organizations, works collaboratively and strategically to implement the Action Plan. The state Plan follows and supports the evidence of the National Arthritis Action Plan. (exit DHFS; PDF, 1.18 MB)
